iPad problem

My 2-year old iPad has become very sluggish, and several applications (Internet Explorer, Camera, Pencil) crash when I try to use them. All other functions operate at a snail pace. What can this be?

Whenever you stop using an app, it doesn't shut down and release its memory. It simply goes into the background. There are two things you can easily try. One is to force reboot your iPad. The other is to open your selector (Typically by double-clicking your Home button.) and swiping up on all of your dormant apps to remove them from active memory.
