For some reason I cannot Updated at all this is the error message it gives me when I try to updated the app is these a defect? can someone help. I have only used my Apple ID since I have purchase the MacBook Air. So I don't know why it's telling me this.

I had the same problem with my brand new Macbook Air. I did a chat with Apple support today and was directed to delete the apps (it was GarageBand, Keynote and Numbers) and reinstall them. Fixed it. I was tempted to do that before I contacted Apple but better safe than sorry.

The easiest solution might be to delete the app and purchase it again. It's free.
Did you purchase your Mac directly from Apple? If not, is it possible someone owned that Mac before you purchased it?
