Well, here is a next logical step we can try. Just to rule out possible problems with your Mac, download install and run the recommended free app EtreCheck. When you run, it be sure to allow full disk access for a full report. It provides a detailed report of your computer's operation. Post the report below under Additional text. Some very smart people here can review it and may offers some excellent input.

You don't provide us with any useful facts to work from, such as which email program you are using and when/how the problems started, so it is not possible to give any definite suggestions. There are some things you can do to isolate where the issue may be. The first question is, are your other internet functions operating normally? If so, then that can indicate the problem is either in your computer or is at the AOL server. Are you able to readily connect to the AOL server directly using a browser without problem? If so, you might install another email app such as Thunderbird and send some test messages to see how the performance is. Often this kind of problem is when you email app is not immediately sending required information to connect to the server. You can check its preferences, etc to verify if everything is correct. I suggest that you click on the link below and read the information is has, and then post any additional information you may have.
