There is a new update for WhatsApp, I updated and that worked for me.

Could see that the issue got fixed in latest whatsapp update with version 2.20.92

If yes, when using WhatsApp, try this:
1) Open the Control Center
2) 3D press (or long press) on the music controls
3) Select the output option (little up-arrow with circles)
4) Select AirPods

I sent an email to the WhatsApp support department, and the response came that they know the problem and there will be an update without mentioning the date.

They work normally with WhatsApp voice calls, but if I want video call I have to make the voice call first, and after the other person replies, I press the camera button and only then they work and the sound is sometimes not fixed. It's annoying.

Fixed it for me too! The update went live today in my country. Finally i can use my airpods on whatsapp video now!!
airpods was not connecting to whatsapp video call when others video call us while it was connecting when i am gonna call to anyone else.
Even i am facing the same problem with airpods 2.... Voice calls are fine but video calls aren't working
I believe Apple did this to push more people to FaceTime, As it used to work before this recent Apple update.
