Does Apple ID ask for my social security number?

Apple ID asked me to provide my Social Security number. I hesitated to do that. Why do they need it and should I provide it?

Only if you are applying for an Apple Card.

Apple will never request personal information by email such as Social Security numbers, your Mother’s maiden name or full credit card numbers .
