Can't get pass Activation Lock

Hello! I had an ipad mini first gen that I had since 2013. I gave that ipad to my mom, three years ago. So I set up an apple id for her so she can use it to download apps. Now, this "activation lock" appears, the worst thing is that I cannot remember the apple id and other details of the account. My mother cannot remember either. What can I do to access the ipad? Can I just wipe everything on it?
