Which software is using the Legacy System Extension?

As of the supplemental update to Mac OS 10.15.6, which I just installed, I'm being informed that some of my software won't work under Mac OS 10.16., but I don't know which applications are affected... or which developers to contact.

Please examine the contents of the following folder:

/Library/Extensions/

To navigate to that folder, copy and paste it in the Finder's Go menu > Go to Folder... field, and click the Go button.

The following files are installed by macOS:

ACS6x.kext

ArcMSR.kext

ATTOCelerityFC8.kext

ATTOExpressSASHBA2.kext

ATTOExpressSASRAID2.kext

CalDigitHDProDrv.kext

HighPointIOP.kext

HighPointRR.kext

PromiseSTEX.kext

SoftRAID.kext

Describe what's different about yours, and someone is likely to come up with a suggestion regarding the apps that use them, so that you can follow up with the developers who put them there.

The reason it is not possible to definitively correlate specific Extensions to the apps that use them is that various apps may use common Extensions. It is unrelated to "legacy software" or 32-bit software.

Many thanks, DiZoE, for this information ... great help!

I've run the System Information report and, according to that, have no legacy software installed, which might warrant contact with any developers. The same is true for the System Preferences check.

I'll assume for now that the warning after the supplemental update is a generic one and not based on any concrete software checks. Do you think is is likely?

Again, many thanks!

Hey there! Hopefully this can help!

If you select the Apple menu > About This Mac > then System Report,

You’ll see three categories Hardware Network and Software, under “Software” you should see a category for “Legacy” software, that should tell you both what it is, and where it is in the file system (below, after selecting it), hope that helps!

About System Information:

Also, you might check System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General, in there, see if you can see if any System Extension was “Blocked” and if it allows you to accept it.

But definitely for legacy software System Info is the place to go, cheers!

Hey again! No worries! If it DID say this error just prior to upgrading the OS, it usually detects other software that wouldn’t be compatible with Catalina. I know, at first at least, 32 bit software from third parties wouldn’t work, (Such as Office for example, although they’ve updated their software I believe).

Another spot to check in System Information is in Software > Applications, I believe there is a column to distinguish 32 bit software from 64 bit, but can’t check right now, but by clicking on the suspect app, I believe it shows in the section below.

This article, although older might help:

Hope that helps! If you get any errors upon a restart, I’d also check the Security and Privacy pane in System Preferences > General to see if there is a message, and also to check what’s automatically launching upon login in System Preferences > Users and Groups > Login Items. (You can add or remove programs here to prevent them from, or make them to open at every login), perhaps if there is an error this is one of the culprits.

Also in System Information under Software is Extensions, after a while they will load, if you click on “Obtained From” on the top right menu, (You might have to expand the window for it to show), just once, the scroll to the bottom, you’ll see all the non Apple Extensions installed, either titles “Identified Developer”, or possibly “Unsigned”, or others. If you click on one of them, the file path shows below, typically from Finder Go > Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Extentions, but can be in other locations. Anyhow I’m particular, if you see an “Unsigned” Extention, and having software issues, and have a backup, (Or just recognize the name and don’t want it anymore), you can delete them from that location).

Otherwise if all is working fine, I wouldn’t worry about it!

Hope that helps out!
