Cursor jumping when scrolling over/clicking links on my 2020 Macbook Pro 13"

The cursor briefly jumps when scrolling past links or after clicking them. It happens in all apps with links, including Safari. It seems to be an issue when the pointer is changing state between the normal arrow and the pointer hand.

I uploaded a video here: https://youtu.be/YehznRhDUDQ

Anyone else had this issue? I have tried all the usual stuff like rebooting, resetting NVRAM and SMC and connecting an external mouse (still occurs with a USB mouse and trackpad disabled). It only happens when the computer is plugged in, never when it runs on battery. It's a minor issue but a little distracting. Does anyone else have this problem?

Hey mikkel01,

We understand your cursor on your Mac is jumping when connected to a power adapter and hovering over links.

This can happen if you're using a third-party charging adapter. Given the steps you've taken to this point, we'd suggest checking to ensure you're using an Apple branded charger moving forward, if you're not already.

For more info on what you can do when this occurs, please review:

If your pointer is jumpy when you use a trackpad, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse

We hope the above info helps out and thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

mikkel01,

Thanks for the update!

If the issue isn't occurring in Safe Mode, this would indicate that the issue is likely caused by a login item.

For help with removing login items, go to  > System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.

Unlock this page by tapping on the padlock and typing in your admin password. Once unlocked, tap on the " - " after selecting a login item to delete it. Restart your Mac afterward and boot it up normally.

For more info on these steps, please review:

Keep us posted on the results afterward.

mikkel01,

If you're continuing experience this behavior even while using the Apple USB-C charger which was included, we'd suggest completing the rest of the steps at resource in our last post.

The very last step in that resource is to test things out in safe mode, as this will rule out any apps or processes which may be launching at startup that might interfere.

To access safe mode, hold the Shift key after turning on your Mac and hold it until you reach the login screen. For more info, check out:

Keep us posted on the results.

mikkel01,

Instead of taking a more invasive step such as a clean install of macOS, you may want to try creating a new user account and testing things out further on it. To do so, go to  > System Preferences > Users & Groups and tap on the "+" in order to add a new account. You'll again need to unlock this page by tapping on the lockpad and entering your admin password.

If the issue doesn't occur in the new user account, you could always transfer your data to it and delete the old account. We'd only recommend doing a clean install of macOS if the issue is system-wide.

If it comes down to it though, you'll find help here:

Thank you for your quick reply. I tried creating a new account, and my issue were present there too. Then I grabbed an external SSD and made a clean install of macOS Catalina on it. I booted into it, and sadly, the issue was present there too. I guess this means that there is either a bug in the latest version of macOS Catalina, or there is something wrong with my MacBook Pro. I guess I am out of luck, or do you have any other suggestions?
