AirPod pro allergic reaction in ears

The inflammation in my ears was so bad I had blood drain with fluid from my left ear

i went to emergency room and the Doctor confirmed The blood Was coming from the encrusted inflamed part of my ear

both ears were severely encrusted with dry dead skin

I was given antibiotic drops as a prophylaxis against ear infection

I had the Dry skin and scale prior to this severe episode

but didn’t associate it with the AirPods.

The first episode and the second episode Have resolved I tried the AirPods one more time

And the Dry skin and crust returned

I posted this to another thread and just want to add it here also:

As it is mentioned in some other threads, please invest the 8-10 bucks to try out the AirPod Pro replacement eartips by Apple. The original ones offered in the Apple store! I was baffled to learn, see, feel and smell that they are indeed not as the stock ones you're get. The outside package looks similar but even the actual package inside is different.

To give a shortened background:

  • I used the AirPod Pro from their product launch for a year without issues until I broke them
  • I bought a new APP unit and after 3-5 days joined the club of people with severe issues for 2-3 months in total (it was frustrating)
  • I tested the AirPod Max with the same strong reaction :-(
  • Before giving up I picked up the hint that the replacement Eartips are different so I just bought them and it worked perfectly now for three weeks!
  • Make sure your ears are fully healed before re-trying of course, never endanger your hearing!

The replacements eartips are really completely different. Slightly different color, no smell whatsoever, not before or after washing and no reaction at all, no even after a sweaty fitness workout :-)

I am very happy with this solution and hope this helps someone else. I notified Apple about this as well with all details.

Pelelieu,

I hope you have better look with Apple engineering then I did, they took nearly a week to come back and say I should clean them regularly, which I do after every run. I have access to a lab so I am intending to get independent analysis performed as I do not intend to let this go, like you I bought these to use not sit in a box. The cost is not as important as the potential safety issue with these with so many people being effected.

I am having the same problem as those on this thread. I have a latex allergy, and I actually asked when I bought the AirPods Pro if there was any latex in the tips. I was advised no. I have used many in-ear headphones before and never had this issue. I started getting the reaction almost immediately but its gotten worse as I have continued to use them. I am curious to know the outcome of the tests, because if there is latex in the silicone then that will explain my issue. My AirPods are only 4-5 weeks old. As per others on the thread, I contacted Apple Support who told me to see my Dr. I will, and I will prove that I do have a known allergy. If this continues, I will want my money back.

Finding this very interesting. I had been using my Pro's for a few weeks without problems. Then, part way through the first UK lockdown, I started getting problems in both ears, including itching, crusting and clear fluid running like water. I didn't associate it with the pro's at all.

I received antibiotic drops from the doctor, which eventually cleared it up. When I put the pro's back in, immediately I get the same problem return within minutes. What's going on?

Xenion,

So I just received my refund for my airpod pros - I see you noted that you bought the replacement tips and have had luck with those? Did you buy these ones directly from Apple.com? (link below)

I am willing to give this another try if that solved your issue. If I run into any issues, I can just return them within 14 days so I may give it another shot...can you confirm??

Thanks!

BTW, I did not call asking or expecting a refund. I would have given them to my daughter. I called to alert them to the problem, in hopes that it would be helpful. They asked me to return them for testing, and told me they would accordingly refund the purchase price. They received my AirPods at the beginning of December, 2020 and, despite repeated emails and calls, I am still waiting for the refund! At this point, I think I have to accept that I have been robbed. This has greatly damaged my faith in Apple.

Can somebody explain to me how a company that can deliver a purchase to me in a few days can't manage to process a refund, which they requested, in 3+ months? The answer is obviously that they just don't care and it is not a priority.
