iCloud photos "optimize iPhone storage" too aggressive

Hello,

I am using iCloud photos and have selected the "optimize iPhone storage"-option (my photo library is larger than what can be stored on the iPhone).

However, I find that this optimization is too aggressive: As soon as a picture is uploaded to iCloud, only a low-resolution version remains on the phone. This is expected and fine for old pictures that I may not make frequent use of. But: Although I have almost 100 GB of free storage, this process also applies to the most recently taken pictures. That is annoying since I like to do edits to them, and that becomes very slow as the full-resolution version needs to be downloaded over and over again.

Is there any way to prevent this? Does other people also experience this inconvenience?

Thanks!

(I have a iPhone 11 Pro 256GB iOS 13.6.1)
