Apple Pencil 2 not working or pairing.

Hello. My Apple Pencil 2 suddenly stopped working. When I connect it to the magnetic strip, the words Apple Pencil appear at the top of the screen but the charge amount does not (it used to), and the letters fade from bright to dull and back repeatedly.

I followed the troubleshooting steps on the Apple site, but it did not change anything. When I turn bluetooth of and then on, and attach the pencil, the Apple Pencil “button” at the top of the screen changes to say “connect”. When I tap that, the iPad times out trying to connect (see screenshot).

I thought maybe the pencil required charging so I charged it overnight and tried the troubleshooting steps again this morning but to no avail.

Any ideas?

As described, your Apple Pencil is displaying symptoms of a dead battery - that will not accept or hold any charge. Has the Pencil been separated from the iPad for an extended period of time, such as being set aside in a drawer?

The tiny internal Li-ion battery is susceptible to permanent/irreversible damage through being left discharged for long periods. Even some “new” pencils can exhibit signs of failure out-of-the-box if they are “old stock”.

It is essential that if you have an Apple Pencil that you charge it regularly - whether used or not - so as to protect the battery from deep-discharge. Do not allow a pencil to remain in low-charge state for any period of time - as the internal battery will fail, rendering the Pencil useless. To protect the Pencil battery from premature death, a second generation Pencil should docked with the iPad at all times when not being actively used.

If the Pencil Battery has failed, the only remedy is to replace the Pencil. If the battery has failed and your pencil is within its one-year warranty, you should look to having it replaced by Apple. Within the warranty period, if the Pencil is otherwise undamaged, Apple generally replace the Pencil without quibble.

I hope this information proves to be helpful in both diagnosing and resolving the problem.

I have the same issue and have had three pencil replacements all with the same problem so for me, it’s not the battery and probably wasn’t for you if you’re using is regularly.

I was put through to the senior (escalations) support team who said that there’s a software issue with iOS which is causing the problem. They say they are working on a fix but I first raised this issue 2 months ago and still am none the wiser

more and more people seem to be having it so maybe they’ll take notice and sort it out sooner rather than later. For me, when I forgot the pencil in Bluetooth Settings I was never able to re pair it again no matter what I did
