How to change album cover on Apple Music

Ever since I upgraded to iOS 13 my picture to songs (Album covers) are mixed up on my Iphone .

Showing the wrong cover for the song I am playing.

Movies too. Some movies show a Song Album cover as it's thumbnail ??

But it is all only on my iphone. Syncing doesn't help .

Any help would be appreciated !!

Okay, in case it helps, this did the trick for me:

  1. In iTunes, I unchecked the music sync, and then synced the phone.
  2. Confirmed there were no more playlists on the iPhone.
  3. Checked the lists of SONGS -- yep, they were still there.
  4. On the iPhone went to settings >> iPhone storage and deleted all the songs and playlists.
  5. Back in iTunes, did another sync (making sure that the "sync music" was UNCHECKED)
  6. Checked the phone -- no songs, no playlists.
  7. In iTunes, checked a few TEST playlists on to sync to the phone.
  8. Synced the phone.
  9. Playlists were added AND they had the proper artwork
  10. Satisfied, I checked all the playlists (meaning, I did not check "sync my whole library")
  11. Clicked sync.

And then I waited...

And that did the trick. Like magic!

Rationale: I reasoned that for some bizarre reason, the iPhone was pulling images to build playlists from the songs, and so somewhere that process was garbled. The albums and songs had the proper images, but the playlists did not. So I figured "resetting" those relationships might work. So, I experimented by deleting all the songs and albums of a single playlist, and then reloading from scratch. My guess is that this "reset" the song >> album >> playlist image association.

My reasoning might have been wrong, but hey, I can't complain about the results -- 13,000 + songs all look perfectly lovely now with all their correct images, and I did not have to reload images from any source.

My problem started when I set up new iPhone 12 Mini. All the albums were a jumble and many under the same albumcover. I followed the routine mentioned by jtanerga in message above. I had to delete all music in settings > music > downloaded music > edit > delete all. After reboot and resync, choose albums and resync again. I followed this routine 3 times before all was right again. Thanks, jtannerga! I think it was the deletion in Music and reboots which did the trick.

Have had this issue since I upgraded to iPhone 12 Pro, from iPhone 10, along with the duplicated music issue (which I resolved by deleting all of the music on my phone in the storage section, then re-synching).

However, have found that viewing the album artwork in the 'On My Device' section of the iPhone page in iTunes shows the artwork ( for those tracks showing incorrect artwork on my phone ) as being blank, even though the artwork exists in the larger iTunes library.

If I then add the artwork to the tracks where it's missing, on the 'On My Device' screen, it then synch's the correct artwork to my phone.

No idea why these different places would be different though, considering the files were synch'ed from the same library.

Any one from Apple like to assist?

I just got an iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and did the side by side set up with my old iPhone 7 which had several thousand songs. It transferred perfectly but I noticed that a couple of albums were showing as "Various Artists" (on both phones) and I wanted them to be under a single artist so I went into iTunes on my computer and changed the "Performing Artist" field then synced my music and everything doubled up. I deleted ALL the songs off of my iPhone then re-synced and now a lot of the album covers are swapped. I didn't know I had 9 Abbey Roads! This is frustrating and I don't want to re-setup my phone but I may do that because I really want the correct album covers and I don't know when they will fix this issue.

You've probably fixed it by now but I had a similar situation: I got an iPhone 12 Pro yesterday and did the setup side by side with my iPhone 7 and it was perfect – all my music transferred perfectly. Today I synced the phone up to iTunes to

update a couple of the artists that were listed as “Various Artists” that I wanted as a single artist. The sync process duplicated all of my music so I had two of every song. To fix this issue I deleted ALL the songs from the phone and synced the phone’s “Music” with iTunes and it brought all the music back in but a lot of the albums had the wrong cover.

I researched this online and found this site. A few people here have mentioned manually deleting the albums with the wrong covers then re-syncing. I had a lot of them but I took the time to delete them all one-by-one from the phone then I re-synced with iTunes and everything is fine now. Thanks to those who recommended this fix.

This has been an absolute nightmare for me. I bought an iPhone 12, followed the recommended peer-to-peer transfer, and found out that the vast majority of my PREVIOUSLY PURCHASED music was marked as unplayable due to digital rights issues. I tried resyncing with my Macbook Pro via a lightning/USB connection, and found two copies of everything (86Gb x 2) on my phone. After deleting everything from the phone and repeating the lightning/USB sync, I finally have playable music (I think).

Now I find that the cover art is all mixed up on the phone, but not on the iPad or Macbook Pro. Top that off with the fact that SAFARI NO LONGER SYNCS TABS ACROSS DEVICES.

Fix it fast, or NEVER AGAIN APPLE!

Next experiment: on my iphone, I created a NEW playlist and populated it from songs already on the iphone (in my case, the SONG artwork is fine -- the jumble is only on the PLAYLIST artwork).

The artwork persisted and looked normal.

I performed a sync or two and the artwork of the playlist I had phone-created remained perfectly normal.

Then I tried syncing back in a couple playlists from iTunes and those playlist images were all cocked up. Arg.

Thanks for this post. This was pretty helpful. It appears that when you're in iTunes, if you click on to your device and then MUSIC and you try to sync your "Entire music library", you'll bound to experience the mixed up art work situation.

In order to combat that, I went into my device, then MUSIC, and while I had "Sync Music" checked off, instead of "Entire music library" being checked, I selected "Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres" and then started selecting a few Artists at a time to see if I was experiencing issues. Surprisingly, I wasn't. So I started selecting a few more artists at a time while clicking the sync button. While a little inconvenient, it seemed to do the trick.

Hope this helps!

Just got an iPhone 12 mini and transferred all my music from my iPhone 7. It went well and all album covers are correct. I have lots of music and manually drag music from my computer to my phone if it isn't music I purchase through iTunes. I added some new music today ripping CDs and added the correct artwork to the computer. All looks good on the computer. I moved that new music to my new iPhone and the covers were swapped out with random covers from my library. When I look at the iPhone on the computer through iTunes, the covers show correctly on the computer, but they are not correct on the physical phone. I deleted the new music I added because it's so annoying to have the wrong album cover. Sounds like this is a common problem.

I am having the same issue. I updated to Version 10.15.7 on my iMac and updated the most recent IOS on my iPhone 11 Pro Max. After the last phone update I started experiencing issues with album art in the Music App. I have too many songs to sync to my iPhone so I transfer everything manually. I just started seeing that my songs were showing the wrong artwork. Oddly enough the incorrect album artwork were groups that started with a B. Such as Beastie Boys, Black Crowes, Blood Sweat and Tears, etc. very odd and I haven't found a solution.

Yup just noticed on my new iPhone 12 Pro Max (upgraded from iPhone 7 plus). Opened up music on phone for first time sense syncing with iTunes on pc. All the artwork is screwed. (Plays just fine).. So now I have to take time trying fix it as I spent a god-aweful amount of time getting my library just so several years ago..

I'll update this post if anything works

I figured out the simple fix. Couple iPhone to your iTunes account. Go to the MUSIC tab and unclick the "SYNCH Music onto iPhone" button in the upper left. Then, click SYNCH on lower right. Once done, start the process over except CLICK the "SYNCH Music onto iPhone" button in the upper left and then click SYNCH on lower right. Whalla.....all the album art is immediately corrected!!
