How to change album cover on Apple Music

Ever since I upgraded to iOS 13 my picture to songs (Album covers) are mixed up on my Iphone .

Showing the wrong cover for the song I am playing.

Movies too. Some movies show a Song Album cover as it's thumbnail ??

But it is all only on my iphone. Syncing doesn't help .

Any help would be appreciated !!

Okay, in case it helps, this did the trick for me:

  1. In iTunes, I unchecked the music sync, and then synced the phone.
  2. Confirmed there were no more playlists on the iPhone.
  3. Checked the lists of SONGS -- yep, they were still there.
  4. On the iPhone went to settings >> iPhone storage and deleted all the songs and playlists.
  5. Back in iTunes, did another sync (making sure that the "sync music" was UNCHECKED)
  6. Checked the phone -- no songs, no playlists.
  7. In iTunes, checked a few TEST playlists on to sync to the phone.
  8. Synced the phone.
  9. Playlists were added AND they had the proper artwork
  10. Satisfied, I checked all the playlists (meaning, I did not check "sync my whole library")
  11. Clicked sync.

And then I waited...

And that did the trick. Like magic!

Rationale: I reasoned that for some bizarre reason, the iPhone was pulling images to build playlists from the songs, and so somewhere that process was garbled. The albums and songs had the proper images, but the playlists did not. So I figured "resetting" those relationships might work. So, I experimented by deleting all the songs and albums of a single playlist, and then reloading from scratch. My guess is that this "reset" the song >> album >> playlist image association.

My reasoning might have been wrong, but hey, I can't complain about the results -- 13,000 + songs all look perfectly lovely now with all their correct images, and I did not have to reload images from any source.

I think you nailed it!

I did delete "Music" files on iPhone, but this may have been an unnecessary step. One thing to note, I suspect the initial migration from my iPhone 7 to 12 Pro Max did something that caused it to be weird.

I spent a month organizing my library 10 years ago when I was still syncing on a 160 gig iPod. First time I had any issues.

I posted a step-by-step sequence I found a week or two ago. Hardly any work at all, but does take time to reload the music.

Anyway, to follow up — my phone still is good as far as cover images. And I’ve added a lot of new music since and it remains happily connected to the right artwork.

No need to do some kind of work the length of which is driven by how many playlists you have. It turned out to be a lot easier than I expected.

Have tried deleting all songs off iPhone 12 Pro, re-starting iPhone and re-syncing with iMac and problem doesn't go away. Cured some of the covers being correct against the song but not the album or some playlists. Running Big Sur on iMac & iPhone 12 Pro, both up to date.

Come on Apple - please fix this, it's so annoying !!!

I believe you have to delete and re-transfer all songs in your iPhone library. However you use the select tracks to transfer option if you have a large library. Mine has got better but some still are not correct. I’m gonna try again and see what happens. I am using MUSIC on my iMac rather than iTunes. As someone with OCD it’s doing my head in !!! Wish they would resolve ......

What worked for me was going into iTunes & requesting album artwork. Then, I back up all content on my iPhone phone. Afterwards, I reset/erased ALL content on my iPhone phone. Then I set-up/restored all content on my iPhone. It took about an hour, but it worked.

I did try removing all music & re-adding it before resorting to the above, but it didn’t work.

I have discovered more information since I posted this. I have lots of music on my phone that isn't available online and so I continue to RIP CDs and move them to my phone. I just got a new CD and copied and pasted the cover into the album artwork on the computer as I have previously. If I try to transfer it to my iPhone 12 Mini via Apple Music, the cover art picks up a random selection from my other cover art. If I use the finder to drag the music onto the phone instead of Apple Music, it doesn't apply a random cover, it just shows no artwork at all. I actually prefer this to having the wrong cover associated. I also am using my old iPhone 7 as a music player so I used Apple Music on my computer (running Catalina) to transfer the new CD to my iPhone 7 running 14.2 and the cover art transfers properly. So, it seems to be something with the newer iPhones rather than Apple Music itself or the iOS. Not sure if this is helpful, but it is more troubleshooting info.

Okay, I see what you are doing, but need to clarify something.

First, when you uncheck "sync music" it will delete all music form the iPhone. I'm okay with that, in fact this is how I solved the problem many iOS's ago.

Second, please clarify whether in your fix you select sync "entire music library" or do you choose "selected albums/genres/playlists" which means you need to manually select everything from the list below that.

I've got lots and lots of music and would require a stiff espresso or two to manually select everything. If would also seem that if this method of selecting individually is the solution, one might need to make selections under each tab for album, artist genre etc as well for them to come over.

What has been your experience?

I actually just resolved my issue. It began with switching from iTunes to the Music app on my iMac. In MUSC go to your phone on the left. Once in your phone select the music tab. Check the and uncheck the Sync music onto... . I chose to SYNC selected artists. Then chose an artist that I may have only one album of. I then selected SYNC at the bottom and that artist will be put on your phone. I have over a TB of music so I can't select my whole library. I think the issue lies between creating a new "library" file between the old iTunes app and the new Apple Music. Anyway, it now works.

I just purchased the iPhone 12 Max Pro and when I sync all my downloaded CD,'s on iTunes every album cover was mixed up.

To fix: I went to iTunes un-sync all all of the music, and then disconnected. On the phone I deleted the iTunes music app, and then reinstalled it. I went back to iTunes, and click sync music: Check Select Playlist, artist, albums, and genres. I check a couple artist at first just to see if it work then I did more, all individually. Everything sync fined !
