Unable to download macOS High Sierra

Trying to download macOS High Sierra from the App Store (to wipe and reinstall macOS on an old MacBook Air), following the link from:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208969

I get an error when downloading - "Update not found - The requested version of macOS is not available."

The downloaded installer was correct, but booting from the USB disk wasn't working for me.

I went out and got a new USB stick (just in case) and tried again using createinstallmedia - this time it worked!

So to summarize the solution:

  1. I removed the existing Install macOS High Sierra application, as the code signing was expired for the old copy
  2. I used a new USB stick to ensure a good copy using the createinstallmedia program included with the installer.

Don't use Firefox for this link...

If you get a corrupted message...

Naw, not damaged, it's just that you have an old copy already in Applications, there are 2 cures...

Disconnect from the Internet & set the Date back to 2014, then you can run the Install MacsOS High Sierra App in Applications, so expired Certificates are not expired.

Or... trash the Install MacsOS High Sierra.app in Applications then a new copy more recent version can be downloaded.

If you have downloaded the Install macOS High Sierra.app and it appears in your Applications folder, it should

be 5.23GBs in size.

What did you do next, did you follow the instructions in this article,

How to create a bootable installer for macOS – Apple Support

if so you should have created a bootable USB installer.

When you then plug this bootable USB installer into the MacBook Air did you Restart it

while pressing and holding the option/ alt key. After a couple of minutes you should see the

Startup Manager where you select the bootable USB and press Return.

The USB should boot up where you will see a Utilities panel where you use Disk Utility to

erase the macs Disk, and then use Install OS to install High Sierra.
