I have seen this question many times, but I don't see an answer that I can understand. How do I connect my Dell PC from work to my 27" Mac monitor? It can't be that difficult. Do I have to install windows on my Mac? What cords do I use?

The ONLY 27" iMacs that will work with a PC are late 2009 and 2010 27" iMacs, if you have another year iMac please buy an external display for your pc.

There are different ways around it depending on what peripherals standards each machine supports. The link above offers several solutions.
If it's a 27" 2009 or 2010 iMac you may be able to use it as a display for your Dell PC. What video connectors are on the PC?
As stated, only the 2009 and 2010 may have a shot at working.
The only alternative is Microsoft Remote Desktop or some
other VNC client/server app. How well those work depend
on how fast the network connection is and what sort
of work you intend doing on it.
That seems to only address the issue of Mac to Mac. I want PC to Mac using the Mac monitor only.
