will an Apple tech ever ask for me to get a gift card to correct an ICloud or IP address hacking problem? The people that called me from a California area code were very convincing and used the name Martin Barbela, a valid name on Apple site

Yes, as stated all such calls are scams. Always.

Apple does not make such calls.

All such calls are scams from criminals attempting to steal your personal and financial information. The callers will often use number spoofing to pretend they are calling from a legitimate business. The correct course of action is to hang up on them, repeatedly if needed.

thanks to all and it's exactly what I thought it was, a SCAM. When I got a call back from "Martin B" (the name he used which is an actual Apple person from the search I did on Apple as he had cases) and advised I turned the digitally recorded call, phone numbers and notes I took over to the FBI and FCC he hung up really fast!
