Place Personal MPG Movies to iCloud/Photos/Movies?

Hi,

For the longest time I have been wanting to save my movies to a cloud based service for safe keeping, but these are all personal movies that were converted to digital years back from film, 8mm and more. Again these are all personal so I don't want to upload to YouTube just to mark them as private.

So my question is, moving forward if I drag and drop these movie files into Photos can they be uploaded and stored to the iCloud for later Use or playback?

If Photos isn't the correct way, would it be iMovies? Again I just want them in a place that at any point I could play them back on my home TVs through Apple TV if needed since I don't have a household DVD and those DVD's were home written so the likely hood of the DVD media giving out is high.

For now they are saved to a external drive but would like an easier way to have them available for playing or pulling into iMove for editing if I wanted to redo them one time over to a more current movie process state.

Please advise your suggestions and proposed process that I should keep. And I don't want a third party (i.e. Vimeo) process since its not in the apple eco system. I'm already paying for cloud services and storage with my movies with apple. So if there is a way with iCloud that would be the process I'm looking for.

Thanks

iMac Line (2012 and Later)

Hi iNexxFear,

We know how important it is to import photos and videos to your Mac for safe keeping. this article provides steps on importing from your device to the Photos App.

After importing, take a look at this article to save them into iCloud.

Be aware that the iCloud Photo Library is not an off computer storage facility. It's a syncing service. So any changes made at either end will be reflected on the other end.

Personally I would put the movies on an external SSD drive. What I use is this:

The adaptor cable is inexpensive and lets me swap out different bare SSD drives as needed. I don't have them plugged in all the time, only when I need to view the files or add new files to them.

The photos library is already on the SSD, and syncing to the cloud.

i want this to be available to devices synchronizing and if possible via Apple TV so they can be easily accessed and played on the large screen. But from your response I’m not sure if the movie if synchronized would be playable but not sure why it wouldn’t since iPhone videos are out there for devices to see and use.

i have written a feedback request to Apple to make delineation between photos locally and the cloud so that you easily know where they are.

in the meantime just looking for a safe place to keep these videos for easier playback and storage
