macbook pro shows 500gb instead of 1TB of storage

I used migration assistant to transfer information to my new macbook pro. Why is it showing 500gb (storage of old computer) instead of 1TB?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 10.15

After migration the new mac book has 197GB of data used on the disk vs. on the old one the Get Info shows 205GB. is that normal and what is missing or does not get transferred? just being worried to lose some stuff. Why does my new Mac say that there is not enough space from my old mac? I've attempted to move the data from my old mac to my new 2019 macbook pro (both essentially the same... 16gb). However, once it began to transfer, the new mac said there was not enough space. I'm not sure how the new mac doesn't have enough space for the old mac data. They are essentially the same. I do not want to lose any of my information from the old mac.

Migration Assistant Space I am trying to migrate everything from a 1 TB MacBook pro to my new M1 MBP with 4TB. Migration Assistant finds something like 5TB of info on the original MBP, so tells me there is not enough space on the M1. That's impossible isn't it? When I run the storage check on the MBP it says I am using around 960GB. The MBP is running Mojave 10.14.6.

Where are you finding that information?

To determine your Mac's storage capacity, refer to Get system information for your Mac - Apple Support.

Excerpt:

Storage: View how much of your storage device is being used and the types of information stored. See available storage space.
