That port that you thought was a HDMI port is actually a Display Port.

You have a Thunderbolt 2 (MiniDisplay Port) on your MacBook Air and a Display Port on your Extended Display (Based on your first image)

What you need is a ➔ Thunderbolt 2 (MiniDisplay Port) to Display Port cable
