Locked iPad found in trash
I found this iPad discarded in a trash pile. Is there anyway to return it to the original owner, from whom it was probably stolen??

If you have a cable and charger, put it on charge and try to turn it on. If the person enabled Find My and Lost Mode, you may see a message from the owner display a contact number.
This is what the owner may did: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen
Hope this helps and solves your question. Do not hesitate to ask if you need more information.

Kathy: Nice job.
Question for the community:
Based on my own reading of:
https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT201472
This iPad is showing indications that:
1) FindMe was set by the owner
2) It was “Erased” remotely thru FindMe
3) It has not yet been deleted from the owner’s account.
Am I misinterpreting something; or are there other possibilities.
Thanks for your suggestion. I am charging the iPad and have connected it to my internet. The only option presented is "Slide to set up: and then "Activation Lock" where I need to enter the Apple ID and password used to set up the iPad. I'll post a "Found iPad" on NextDoor to try to locate the owner.
Maybe you can try finding the serial number for on the back of the iPad, (Wi-Fi + cellular model), you'll also find the IMEI, and direclty chat or call Apple.
Thanks for trying to help. I can't get past the "Activation Lock" so no access to Siri. Also, there is no message from the owner. I'll post a "Found iPad" on NextDoor to try to identify the owner.
Brilliant! Putting the iPad under a bright light and zooming with my iPhone, I can finally read the serial #. Thanks!!
Apple is not able (willing?) to contact the owner using the serial number. Apple advised me to contact law enforcement.
Apple will not become involved with lost or stolen devices. They are not law enforcement.
Apple doesn’t take reports of, nor get involved, at all, with anyone’s lost or stolen personal property.
