I saved all my Mac laptop hard drive via time machine onto a rugged LaCie. I now have a new Mac laptop and it won’t open the apps such as photo and the pop up tells me that it cannot open things saved from time machine.

If you migrated your data from the backup when setting up the new Mac, open the copies on the internal drive. If not, run the Migration Assistant.
