Keychain

My son has my old iPhone 6 but and his own iCloud account, but he can access my passwords in the Keychain. How is that possible?

Hi!

Keychain starts locally on your device, by saving the passwords on your iPhone and protecting them with the device´s passcode or your Face/Touch ID.

Then, if you log in with an Apple ID, you can ask iCloud to also sync the keychain data, on your iCloud tab in the Settings app. This will then sync those locally stored passwords to iCloud and encrypt them with your Apple ID password.

You will need to break the link between your passwords and the iPhone 6. So here´s how to fix it now:

FIRST, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BACKUPS OF WHATEVER IS IMPORTANT TO YOU. THE NEXT STEPS WILL ERASE DATA, AND WITHOUT A BACKUP YOU WON´T BE ABLE TO RETRIEVE YOUR PERSONAL DATA.

You can use iCloud, backup via Finder/iTunes, or use other services like Google or Dropbox.

On your old iPhone 6:

  • Go to SETTINGS - Apple ID badge at the top - ICLOUD and find the Keychain option. Turn this off. (At this point you break the link between the iPhone 6 and iCloud Keychain);
  • If asked to keep or delete choose DELETE (this won´t affect your other devices).
  • Check SETTINGS - ACCOUNTS (or PASSWORDS AND ACCOUNTS), and using the device passcode see if you need to manually delete any locally stored passwords.

At this point, you should have the Keychain data removed from the iPhone 6.

Give that a go and let me know if it works.

Hope this helps,
