MacBook stopped charging completely

I noticed that when I tried charging my computer that the small piece which goes into the computer would not go into the computer completely. I had sand in my bag from the other night so I assumed some sand was stuck in the small charger. I tried cleaning it out and managed too but I think it has interfered with the charging to my computer. My computer will not charge anymore. Is this because I cleaned the small piece of the charger that goes into the computer too hard? Or is it maybe because I jammed the charger too hard into the computer ?
