is iMac 2020 Glitching normal ?

Hi,

I have a brand new 2020 iMac and cannot enjoy fully because there is white glitching line coming up from nowhere especially with dark background. Is it normal ? or is it a malfunction of my iMac ? Do I need to replace it ? It still between 14 days and no idea where and who to aks. Its hard to catch the moment as as screenshot but the white line is coming like a lightning style. Also noted sometime in same area but sometime different area.

Thanks in advance for your suggestion and advice.

For your information, during the first 14 days of purchase, you can return a device for a full refund if you purchased it directly from Apple. There is no "replacement" - it is simply a return. You can then decide if you want to buy another. You can, however, exchange it if the local store has the item you want in stock. Here is Apple's return policy including instructions on how to return an item:

https://www.apple.com/shop/help/returns_refund

Since we are not Apple employees, but just other end users, we do not know what Apple's policies or plans may be and are not allowed to speculate per the ToU here. So, unfortunately, we cannot say if a replacement would be functioning well or not.

Out of curiosity, you said it was a brand new machine, but your signature shows that you are running 10.13 - a brand new one would have come with 10.15. So, exactly what year/model is yours?

HI(Bonjour)!

As Apple investigate this problem, we cannot now say if it's software or hardware related.

In the first case, Apple's and AMD ingineers's may publish a software patch to resolve the issue. We don't know the timeframe for this solution.

If it' hardware one, may be we can be stock in a long wait to get a perfectly functioning replacement machine. Sometimes Apple responds rapidly, other times, an action Class lawsuit is required (As MacBook Pro 15" 2011 AMD defective graphic card).

So, If you need you machine to get work done and earn money, keep it and cross your fingers for the software side of the problem.

If you're not confortable, ask AppleCare for a return within 14 days.

As Yo6 wrote in https://discussions.apple.com/thread/251720089?page=2

"I received my brand new iMac Wednesday with the same configuration and I experimented exactly the same problem.

Today I called Apple Support.

The support told me:

  • the problem is known internally by Apple. The internal issue had been released yesterday (afternoon, around 3:00pm)
  • engineers are working on these random horizontal white lines / 5700 XT 16Gb
  • we don't know if problem is related to hardware or software

I don't know what to do with my brand new iMac :

  • Option 1 : return to Apple Store and ask for a new iMac with a cheaper graphic card (but working!)
  • Option 2 : hope the problem is software and wait for next FIX.

If the problem is hardware I will own an iMac defect by design for many years..."

Here is a link to Apple's US warranty:

https://www.apple.com/legal/warranty/products/embedded-mac-warranty-us.html

If you do not want to return it, then the warranty terms will apply. Apple will only offer to replace a machine as a very last resort; there will be at least three repair attempts for the same problem/part. That means you need to send it in and they will try to repair and send it back. If they finally decide they cannot repair and offer a replacement, you will usually receive a refurbished device. You can contact Apple and ask if they will do what you expect.

It would be a better idea to return the machine, but it is your decision.

As for your signature, when you start a new post, you can choose your device underneath the post window and can "choose another device" or different OS.

Hi babowa,

Thank you for your reply and tips. My problem is I don't want my money back. I just want a perfectly working Apple iMac which I paid for. Since there is no apple announcement about this issue and I assumed that my iMac is a defected one. Since I do not want my money back I am sure Apple can replacement offer because there are people like me who wants iMac, not the money back like YouTuber after the shows complete.

I get your point that it is still not clear I will get one back without an issue. Well in this case I have to request all of my friends to pray for me to get one. Thats all we can do right ?

Hope I have the Genuine version of 2020 iMac because I bought from Apple Online Store but I must admit it shipped from China straight to me though. Can it be switch during ? Now I am confused where do you see 10.13 in my image ? Can I check with my serial no to see whether I have Genuine one or not ?

Now I need more help..

Hi, M. B,

Thanks for the reply with the topic. I bought it from OWC EU site directly. I just emailed them to see what is their response. I got my new iMac for now 3 days and still happening but not too much like before though. I cannot be so sure it should be identical but I fell little bit more responsive in FCPX than previous one. I have not sent the old one yet cause there are a lot of application need to deactivate and reactive. I am start looking that one with Apple 8GB memory now. If I notice I will post it here .

But new one with OWC memory is still glitching.

Return it and get one with another Graphics Card. Only the 5700 card seems to be experiencing the problem, not the 5300 or the 5500.

Also only get 8 GB of RAM if you order another 27" 2020 IMac and upgrade the RAM yourself with modules from Crucial.com or MacSales.com at less than ⅓ the cost of what Apple would charge you.

Michel B. Really appreciate your reply with full info. Thank you very much. I will call tomorrow for a replacement to see. Because it is not cheap, also one thing I am worrying about is like it might get worse in time. I saw the line right out from the box but I thought maybe its a new one since Aug 25. Now its been 10 days and still flashing up like watching moody VHS film with £4000 price tag.

This is totally wrong and cannot believe apple is getting people's hard money by easy way with defected pice of crap.

Thanks a lot.

Regards

Hi Michel,

I am praying for you too to get the one without any issue. I will update mine time to time.

Let me know how is your new iMac on 14 goes too.

Even though we have paid certain amount of money for iMac with no question asked, but still we are in an Apple's lucky draw program. Hope among us we may have lucky person who got iMac without any issue.

Sep 10, 2020 7:07 AM in response to Michel Boissonneault

Hey Michel.

Great to hear. Mine will get hopefully tomorrow just got text from UPS. will update. after testing.

The one I currently have is start showing up some serious problem with playing video and playing FCPX.

never ever had this kind of issue and it is now stutter when playing something from website and including in Final Cut.

Stutter mean it should continue at some point but my iMac is just stick to first clip and keep looping.

My FCPX did happen like this already for 3 times in 2 days. Thought I have issue in my FCPX now start showing sign with webpage playback and very identical. So this cannot be my FCPX issue. Could be Graphic Card issue but I cannot assume. If you have any experience let me know why am I having this.
