HEIC/HEIF vs JPG/JPEG Image Quality

Which file format has better quality for iPhone camera photo? Obviously HEIC photos are smaller than JPEG, but is there any real data on which format is higher quality when shot on iPhone?

When HEIC/HEIF was first introduced, I think JPEG had a slight edge. Now I don't think so, but looking for something official or references to some analysis.

I have copied slides with my iPhone 7 in HDR Mode and then convert them to JPG files. The result is that the JPG iles appear to have better color saturation and sharper edges than the HEIC parent. There is no difference in quality.

HEIC/HEIF has better compression.

Can you explain how you know this is the case? I asked "is there any real data on which format is higher quality when shot on iPhone?"
