In FCPX i sent a project with 5.1 audio to Compressor, I made a custom setting
to export 10 bit HEVC 4k with 5.1 sound ...
in the audio choices there is no 5.1...stereo or mono only.
does HEVC support 5.1?

What are the project settings in the first place? If the project is stereo, you can export 5.1. You can change it to Surround by going to the Inspector, and clicking Modify:
I have worked out what I was doing wrong.
Simply needed to select the batch job in Compressor before editing any settings.
I am now seeing what I expect (and am just waiting for the job to complete....)
HEVC takes a while to crunch out, but is worth it
The quality is very good and the file size changes from 6GB to about 400MB!!
