Samsung CRG9 Does Not Detect MacBook Pro (2019)

I have a 15" MacBook Pro (2019) that I got around a month ago, and I just bought a Samsung CRG9 49" monitor as well. I cannot get the two to work together at all.

I tried connecting them using HDMI and the Apple USB-C to Digital AV adapter. The MacBook could detect the monitor, but the monitor did not detect input when I set the source to HDMI. I also tried connecting them using a USB-C to Display Port cable, but neither the MacBook nor the monitor detect each other in that case.

I've tried connecting the MacBook to an older Samsung monitor I have, and it worked, both with the USB-C to DP and the HDMI connections. The Samsung CRG9 also works with my Windows 10 desktop via DP and my older 2015 MacBook Pro using HDMI. The cables, MacBook, and monitor all work in other cases. It's just the combination of 2019 MacBook Pro and 49" Samsung CRG9 that do not want to work together.

That's a 5120 by 1440 display with two DisplayPort inputs. It should work with a high-end displayPort cable, such as the 5K cable sold in the Apple store online:

Moshi USB-C to DisplayPort Cable -- (5K) $49.95

Regardless, if your cable is working, you should be able to see the display in

 menu > about this Mac > (System Report) > Graphics & Displays

The other approach with those displays is to hook up TWO DisplayPort cables, and turn on Picture-by-Picture to show the entire screen as two halves, and MacOS puts the two halves back together in Extended desktop.

But you should see the display in Graphics & Displays. oh wait, there's this:

to get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• on invoking Option-(Detect Display) button in Displays preferences (from another display)

I've tried all the ports on it. I've also tried different cables, a different monitor, and different computers with the monitor. Everything works except the MacBook Pro with the Samsung CRG9 monitor, with any cable.

Today I made some progress. I bought an Amazon basics USB-C to HDMI cable, and it will actually show a picture on the monitor. Unfortunately, it will only show 16:9 resolutions in the display settings, so everything looks stretched and distorted. It's not a long term solution.
