network slows down until I reboot

The network speed through Ethernet on my iMac progressively slows down over several days after reboot. Eventually I notice it because gaming slows down, and now I'm monitoring it with Speedtest and can see the performance dropping. Here's I've tried so far:

  • Stop all applications
  • Stop Dropbox and Google Drive
  • Turn off Bitdefender scanning
  • Check the network usage. It's around 10 kB/s.
  • Turn Ethernet off and on.
  • Scan with Malwarebytes

I'm running Catalina 10.15.6 and have lots of free memory and CPU. Any advice on what else to try?

I fixed the problem. I had two leftover daemons and a kernel extension running from an old Pulse VPN. I disabled the daemons and then removed their files and the network speed has stayed at the high limit. I also unloaded the kernel extension and will remove its file later on when I can reboot into recovery mode.

To get there I did try the safe boot as you recommended. The bandwidth did not drop so I then went back to a regular boot and looked at the daemons that did not belong to Apple. That's when I saw Pulse, which I missed going through the bigger list.

I don't know why I'd want to run without antivirus protection, though.

Uninstall Bitdefender, but...

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup).

Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Whew, they've changed pastebin & made it harder, but after pasting in, click Create new paste button, then Embed button, then copy the URL...

The important part is...

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...
