Apple TV won’t connect to Home Sharing

Just what the title says. 90% of the time my Apple TV (latest model) won’t connect to home sharing. iTunes is open on my PC, everything is set correctly. The mod who responds to all these queries with as link to the “how to set up Home sharing” can skip that since it’s set to correctly.

the weird thing is it’s not consistent. Sometimes it connects. Sometimes, I’ll just have to turn off / turn on sharing in iTunes for it to connect. Other times, I restart my Apple TV and it connects. And other times, I could do either or both ten times and it won’t connect... but on the 11th or 12th try it will.

This problem happened with my old Apple TV (v 2) so I assume the problem is in iTunes or maybe my router?

It is possible power saving settings on your computer are putting the network to sleep, after which the Home Sharing ports might not be accessible, even if you wake up the computer.

Yes, they’re updated. As noted, this is an ongoing issue that has occurred with multiple Apple TVs. As also noted, it will connect at times (after multiple restarts) so obviously they’re on the same wifi.

This is clearly an issue for many people. Just search the community forums. Can Apple actually look into this so maybe those of us with this issue can get something other than a rote copy/paste response?

Make sure both your iTunes and your Apple TV are updated to the latest software update and connected to the same Wi-Fi.

Use Home Sharing to share media from a computer to other devices.

Sadly no. But that’s a good thought. This most often happens when the computer is first started up.

The unit was designed to be used as a server, in fact. Once it’s on there is no “power save” aside from turning it off.
