Does ICloud save text messages? And how do I delete them?

I deleted an iPhone text message because it wasn't sending (It had six photos and I was going to resend it but break it into two messages). It seems to have completely shut down my text messaging capability. The icon is still there, but when I open it it's just the white screen framed by the usual text message image. Nothing happens. All of my texts have been deleted. HELP

If I enable iCloud for messages now, will it save my old existing messages?
