so I found my old iPhone from a few years back, and I have forgotten the passcode I set on it. so I kept trying up until the iPhone was disabled and says connect to iTunes. but my iPhone can't be recognized because I have to approve it, which I can't do because it is disabled. and I can't put it in recovery mode because the home button is broken. what do I do?

With a broken home button, there is not much you can do except make an appointment at the nearest Apple Store for an evaluation and explanation of your options.
