MacAir 2012 suddenly all sites hardly load

My MacAir 2012 El Capitan has recently began to not load websites, or load VERY slowly. Our iPad loads fine using the same wifi connection. When I use my hotspot for internet on the laptop, everything loads fine. I use it for everyday things (email, netflix, amazon, FB, shopping, etc), no gaming, or odd sites.

What can I do to get the laptop back to operating at normal speed for browsing? I have the free Malwarebytes and it checks daily with nothing coming up.

I know it's old, and the battery cycle is past, but it should work since it works fine with a hotspot, right?

You have two anti-virus apps installed. You should never have more than one anti-virus app installed on a computer since they can interfere with one another. Uninstall the Trusteer Endpoint software by following the developer's instructions. MalwareBytes has a better reputation among the forum contributors, but even MalwareBytes is not needed unless you suspect you have accidentally installed adware or malware. Anti-virus software is not needed on a Mac and they usually cause more problems than they solve. Plus these types of apps impact system performance.

As for creating a bootable macOS USB installer just review the linked article and follow the directions. Apple provided the article for users to make a bootable USB installer. If you have any problems, then just provide the exact error message you encounter as well as the command you used.

Reminder: Having a good system backup is very important before attempting any upgrades.

Hi there Tamlouie,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

It sounds as though web sites are not loading or loading slowly when using Wi-Fi. You’re in the right place, we’d be glad to assist in seeking a solution.

Below is a resource that can help:

If you can’t open a website in Safari on Mac

This resource provides great information and steps that can help when not able to open a website in Safari.

If you’re using a VPN on your Mac, we’d advise verifying it’s functioning correctly and also checking to see if any profiles are installed that could have an effect:

Set up a VPN connection on Mac

Use configuration profiles to standardize settings on Mac computers

We hope this helps.

Cheers!

If you are using Safari then it is outdated and the Internet has changed a lot in those intervening years. You will need to use a third party browser such as Google Chrome or Vivaldi. Unfortunately Firefox is no longer an option since Firefox recently stopped supporting macOS 10.11 El Capitan.

The other option would be to upgrade macOS to a newer version such as macOS 10.14 Mojave or macOS 10.15 Catalina. Just make sure your third party apps are compatible with either OS. Catalina no longer supports 32 bit apps so make sure you update any 32 bit third party apps or uninstall them by following the developer's instructions before upgrading to Catalina.

You can use the information in this Apple article to find links to download newer versions of macOS. It also includes instructions for creating a bootable macOS USB installer (I recommend having one again just in case something goes wrong).

I highly recommend you have a good backup before upgrading macOS just in case something goes wrong. You should always have frequent & regular backups since an SSD can fail at any time without any warning signs. Plus it is impossible to recover accidentally deleted data from an SSD.

Previously to reading the last reply, I reset the router to see if that would help and it seems to help a bit. I did run the check report and hope it helps, but don't think it is software related. Again stated, I am not savvy with any of this, so I appreciate the help.

As for creating the bootable macOs installer, is this an easily attainable task for a novice?

Thanks HWTech. I already tried to upgrade 2-3 months ago before all this started. I am not tech savvy, but went thru the steps to make room for the upgrade, but still could not make enough room.

For now I will stop using Safari and use Chrome or Vivaldi. Do you have a suggestion as to which would be better for my system? I have never heard of Vivaldi, so I am interested.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is a "bootable macOS USB installer" for in my particular case?

Run EtreCheck so we can see if you have any software issues that may be causing your Mac to run slow. Post the report here using the "Additional Text" icon which looks like a piece of paper.

Both are based on the same Chromium rendering engine. The main difference is Chrome has a bunch of Google's extra bits in it which can be a privacy concern for some people plus Chrome has a minimalistic interface. Vivaldi has a lot more advanced features and customization options than Chrome (or most other browsers for that matter).

For a Mac with an out of date version of macOS such as your laptop if something goes wrong during the macOS upgrade process, then your options to recover are much more limited. Having a bootable macOS USB installer disk means that you can easily boot the laptop and reinstall macOS again even if you can no longer boot to the internal drive as usual. Once the laptop is running macOS 10.13+ the laptop will have a newer version of the system firmware which gives you access to Internet Recovery Mode. With access to Internet Recovery Mode you can access the online version of several macOS installers to fix or reinstall macOS. Personally I like to be prepared for the worst case scenarios if something goes wrong.

I will take out Trusteer, it was our banking site that wanted it loaded for security, so we did. I removed MalwareBytes. I will make the installer also.

I hope to be able to get enough room so I can upgrade OS. It has to be the photos, since there are both iphotos and photos on they system. It'd be nice to be up to date, even if my battery is past its prime, it still seems like a fine laptop to keep using.

I really appreciate all your help and input. I marked this as solved, since it is up to me now to follow thru.
