Not getting Eject All dialog

I connect my MBP to a portable hard drive through a USB hub every night for backup purposes. When I eject the backup drive in the morning, I often am NOT presented with an "Eject All?" message. That is, the portable drive is just ejected. The '- Data' volume isn't ejected. FWIW, the '- Data' volume also does not show up in the left nav in Finder windows.

After I eject the regular volume without the Eject All choice, I'll usually (but not always) get the following message over an hour later:

Any thoughts about what might be going on?

TIA,

David

I'm wondering if this problem might be related to the usb hub being a bit older....only supports USB 2.0, as an example. Thoughts? Then again, why would this affect only the - Data volume?

That is a good guess.

You can test this by directly connection the external BU using an Apple branded adapter—

USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple

However I have seen some glitches in this regard, and no USB hub involved.

You can always hold the Option key when you unmount through the Finder sidebar

Wish I was getting some help here....I've taken to using Disk Utility to just eject the entire external drive rather than just the volumes. It was working until this am when the Data volume just wouldn't eject cuz some app was supposedly using it. In reviewing the open apps, I couldn't figure out which that would be.

Is there a tool I could use to determine what apps are using which drives?

Thanks.
