block at downtime

There does not seem to be any difference to my childrens’ phones whether Block at Downtime is on or off. All blocking seems to be controllable solely by using the Downtime option. What is Block at Downtime supposed to do differently ?

The Block at Downtime option is only available, if you have set a Screen Time Passcode. For obvious reasons, only you (parent) should know the passcode.

When you toggle ON Block at Downtime, an app when launched will get the Screen Time notification - with an Ask for More Time request. If your child selects this option - only one minute more access to the app is granted. For additional time, the Screen Time Passcode will be required.

When you toggle OFF Block at Downtime, an app when launched will get the Screen Time notification - with an Ignore Limit request. If your child selects this option - access to the app can be granted the Screen Time Passcode will NOT be required.

But that seems to suggest that if the switch is OFF then a child can simply select Ignore Limit to continue using their phone - if so then what is the point of this option ?!

You're assuming that these Screen Time restrictions are only used to restrict access to children & minors on their iPhones & Apple devices.

Screen Time can also be used to monitor one's own use of the iPhone (or Apple device): when we use our phone, for what purposes, for how long, etc. ... in other words what are our phone habits and to provide us a means to change them if we so desire ... to change how much time we spend on our screens.
