Why are my emails loading as read on my Mac?

if your email is an IMAP account then email will sync. So if they were unread on your Mac then you turned off your Mac, then read the email on your phone, the next time you opened Mail on your Mac the email in question would show as read. I'm sorry if I did not understand your description.

Thanks Bob,

No - I uploaded them onto my phone after I'd uploaded them onto my Mac and my MacBook is off. I've recently reestablished my email accounts so something has changed in my settings because it all used to work perfectly.
