Shared music library to my son's Mac; he can play my playlists but he can't see songs

I have shared lots of my songs on my Mac so that my son in the same household can play my songs on his computer.

On his computer, if I click the little carrot next to his Library I can select my library. If I click Songs, all the songs are there. No problem.

Also all my Playlists show up by name only. But if I click on one of my Playlists, things go wrong.

When I first tried this, I found I could PLAY the playlist, but I could not see any songs. The screen is blank.

I can click the "Playing Next" panel (which is the icon on the far upper right side of this screen) and it'll show what is supposedly playing next, however I have noticed it's in the wrong order.

Why can't I see the list of songs in the playlist? The Show setting is currently set to "All Items."

I have noticed other users have reported this problem but I didn't see any answers to it.

Later, as I navigated to different "blank" playlists, I can no longer play the playlist. It seems to be playing songs from another playlist. It's completely mixed up now. So I'll click from Playlist 1 to Playlist 2, but not only does it show no songs for Playlist 2, when I click "play" it continues playing the songs in Playlist 1.

I found out with experimentation is that I have to go "back" all the way to the beginning of the playlist I was playing until NO SONG shows up in the current playing window. Once I do that, when I change playlists, I am able to play a new playlist.

It's very confusing. Is this a bug? A design flaw? Am I not understanding something?

Thanks for any help anybody can provide.

Hey there LegendMaker,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

We understand you are having a problem with sharing content from your Mac to your sons computer. We would be happy to provide some guidance on this.

You've done some great troubleshooting and isolation steps so far, we'd just like to add a few documents to review to ensure everything is set up properly. There are some different ways to share content within a home network, by using Family Sharing, or by using Home Sharing.

Depending on which method you are using, take a look at these helpful articles that go over setting these services up:

Set up Family Sharing

Use Home Sharing to share media from a computer to other devices

If you have tried the steps listed within those articles already to set up your sharing, the next thing we would recommend would be to reach out to us directly to dig a bit deeper in to what might be happening here. You can reach us at your convenience by using this link: Get Support

Best Regards.

Hi,

Since my son is using his own iCloud account, I am using the Family Sharing method. It has been turned on for a long time. Currently he is listed as a family member, and Purchase Sharing = On. However iCloud Storage = Off, and Apple Music = Off (because that seemed to be a feature I don't want - as I want to share music I bought on the Apple Store, via playlists, and are in my library).

He is capable of playing the songs in my library. It's just that he can't see the songs in my playlists. He can only play them, not see them - and they play out of sequence.

I'm at a complete loss.

I have three sons, each with a Mac Mini. My oldest son is the one whose music app cannot see songs listed in my shared music library's playlists. My youngest son's music app CAN see songs listed in my shared music library's playlist.

Which tells me there is some kind of setting difference but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is.

They are both using the exact same OS and the same version of Music app (1.0.6.10). I have checked all the Music settings on both computers and they are exactly the same. My Family Sharing is of course the same, but that's set on my computer. I have checked System Preferences > Sharing, and the Sharing settings are exactly the same on both of their computers.

The ONLY difference between their computers is that my oldest is an Admin and my youngest is not. My youngest, where the Music app works correctly, has his own iCloud account and the Music app is signed into his account and it is authorized to his account, but there is another login on that computer (mine) which is an Admin, and that account is logged into MY iCloud.

Another interesting thing:

I made sure both my oldest son's and my youngest son's music apps were sharing their libraries and their own playlists on my network. So when I go to MY computer (obviously which is an admin), if I go to Library and select my youngest son's library and go to his playlists, the songs show up fine! (As does his with mine.) If I go to Library and select my oldest son's library and go to his playlists, the songs do not show up on my computer either (just as his doesn't with mine).

So the problem has nothing to do with being an Admin. There is some kind of problem with my oldest son's Music app, where it simply cannot see my shared playlist songs nor can I see his.

Another peculiarity: on my son's computer when I select one of my shared playlists (where the songs do not list themselves), if I go to his View menu and select "Songs", I should also see "Column Browser" in the menu, where I can Hide / Show that. But the Column Browser is always missing in this case, even when "Songs" is selected. His Column Browser is NOT missing when I select one of HIS OWN playlists in Song view. Nor is it missing when I select "Songs" under my shared library on his computer. It's only wonky when I select one of my playlists in my shared library from his computer.
