Cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID.

I bought my MBP yesterday and there were apps to be updated on the App Store. However, when I tried updating it, a pop up message says "cannot be updated because it was refunded or purchased with a different Apple ID."

I have only owned one Apple ID with my previous MBPs which I used the same Apple ID to sign into my new MBP.

The apps I were trying to update were Garage Band, Numbers, Pages and Keynote which were already installed into the MBP before I signed into my Apple ID. So, I am unsure how do I update these apps now.

Thank you.

Welcome, potatoleaf, to Apple Support Communities!

We see that you bought a new MacBook Pro, just yesterday (congratulations!) and you are seeing some of the preinstalled Apps have updates available, but the App Store seems to be giving some difficulty with the updates.

We can help with this!

These preinstalled Apps were not actually installed by you, so that’s why it is telling you there is a problem doing an update.

What it’s not telling you, at this point, is that these preinstalled Apps need to be “Adopted” by you, so they will be actually owned by you (then you can update like usual).

I had a similar issue with a Mac mini I bought a few months ago.

First, make sure you “force” the App Store to log you in.

It tends to look like you are logged in, even when you are not.

Within the App Store, go to the menu Store->View My Account.

If you are not logged in, it will bring up an Apple ID login dialogue, so you can log in.

Now, this is the part where I don’t recall exactly what I did—whether I simply went to Updates, or viewed my purchased Apps, or if I had to go to the individual App pages—however, at some point, the App Store alerted me that I had Apps that needed to be “Adopted”!

At that point, I acknowledged that I did want to “Adopt” the Apps in question.

After that, no problems!

Please let us know how this all goes for you!

Hi! Thanks for replying!

I have done whatever you had said above including going into individual pages to update the app. However, the same message saying that I cannot update it pop up.

I have clicked "View my Account" and I am logged in.

There was no alert about adopting the apps.

I forgot to mention earlier in the OP was that I was able to update iMovie normally but not the other apps. So not sure what is happening.

Yes, Khotayadav74 and potatoleaf.

If you are never presented with the “Adoption” dialogue, or you get an error when trying to “Adopt”, you may have a conflict between the factory installed versions and “migrated” versions. (Or something else, for all we know.)

In that case, you need to completely delete the offending Apps (including emptying the Trash), probably rebooting (just to make sure the Operating System isn’t retaining information on the Apps), then finding and installing the Apps.

Fortunately, these Apps are Free, so it really doesn’t matter whether the App Store recognizes that you have “purchased” them, before, or not.

Yes, Allan Jones. You are correct that purchasing secondhand Macs that haven’t been «properly prepared for resale» exhibit similar issues, and worse!

However, I had the same responses from the Mac App Store, on a brand new Mac mini direct from Apple, before I logged into the Store.

Unfortunately, there have been others that have continued having such troubles, even then, who have (apparently) purchased their Macs directly from Apple.

For at least some, their experience accompanies having migrated Apps from a previous Mac.
