Error message trying to update OS

I have a macbook pro that I am trying to update and I can not log into the App store to download catalina. I keep getting a message "The server gave an error during download: 503 Service Unavailable". I noticed on two message boards two people have said their laptops died after seeing this message. Can anyone help?

Hi, welcome to the Apple Users Community.

If the App Store says ‘Open’ it is detecting a prior download of the install app.

Go to the Applications folder, locate Install macOS ******.app, move it to the Trash and Empty the Trash.

Restart your MacBook, try the link again, the App Store should say ‘Get' or 'Download'.

Please use Safari to access the following links, do not use Firefox or Chrome

Beware: If you are considering upgrading to Catalina be warned that it does not support 32bit apps.

Your Mac is running 32bit apps and these will need to be updated to 64bit apps

How to upgrade to OS X El Capitan

Prior to upgrading make a full back up of your MacBook.

Rather than WiFi use a wired connection if possible.

Do not use your mac while it is downloading.

Best of luck
