I must have made some wrong choices in setting things up. I want to be independent of the 'cloud' and use it only for backup, if at all. Files missing from certain folders in my icloud backup as well as my macBook. Some of the folders backed up to my icloud drive are now empty both on multiple computers as well as in the icloud. Cant tell how or why this happened but I need to get these files back. From reading this forum this seemed to have happened to others also and i have seen comments by people who managed to get their files back after similar problems but not clear how they did it.

This should get you started -- Archive or make copies of the information you store in iCloud - Apple Support.
