Turn off Auto-format on iOS notes

On an archived, unanswered post of the same question, this was worded better than I could hope to do myself:

-

I type “1. “ and it indents it and starts a ”smart“ list. I don’t want this. I just want normal plain text typing.

On macOS this is called smart lists and can be turned off in the Edit menu under Text Substitutions.

How the heck do we turn it off on iOS?

This question (or similar) has been posted numerous times elsewhere on discussions.apple.com and none of them have been answered.

Is is there really no way to turn this off?

I have this same question.

I am not asking *how* to format into a list, or how to turn the list off.

I use the Notes app most frequently when wanting to type something out for another app since it's easier and less likely to be lost should the app crash. Or I just do it because it's not a tiny place to type.

But what the heck do I do if what I'm doing doesn't let me do this in notes?
