powerpoint on ipad why are my drawing tools grayed out

I am using Powerpoint on my iPad with an Apple Pencil. The drawing tools for Powerpoint are grayed out. Does anyone know how to ungray them?

No details here of your iPad model - or the installed version of iOS/iPadOS.

Be aware that most Microsoft App for iPad require an Office365 licence for screen sizes over 10.1”. Devices with smaller screens have some basic editing tools available without an active subscription.

Without an Office363 subscription, devices with screens of 10.1” or greater can only open and review an existing document.

I have an iPad (7th generation) running iOS 13.6.1. I do have an Office365 subscription.

Weird thing is the drawing tools were working and now they switched and are grayed out. I think it is a setting that I need to change, but I don't know which setting it is.
