Missing 2nd Gen Airpod

Tried using the Find Me app to locate a missing Airpod, with no success. It recognizes the Airpod still in my possession. But when I try to "Play Sound" to test the app, that Airpod I still have will only play the sound while it is in my ear. What good is that ? It's not lost in my ear ! f that Air Pod is placed on a table across the room or under the couch, no sound is played.

So how am I expected to use that feature to find the missing one ? Is this normal and the way it's supposed to work ?

From reading your post, it's understood the Find My AirPods feature isn't playing sounds when testing to hear the sound. We'd like to help. How long have you let the sound play? How to find your lost AirPods

"Play a sound

If your AirPods are near any of your Apple devices and connected to Bluetooth, you can play a sound to help you find them from iCloud.com or the Find My app. Your AirPods play a sound that gets gradually louder for two minutes, or until you tell them to stop.

Open the Find My app.
Select the Devices tab.
Choose your AirPods from the list.
Tap Play Sound.

Make sure that you remove the AirPods from your ears before you play a sound".

"If your AirPods are offline

If you didn't turn on Find My [device] before your AirPods went missing, you can't use it to locate your device. If you see "No location found" under your AirPods, you can't play a sound to find them but you might be able to get directions to the location where they were last connected. If your AirPods do come back online, you'll get a notification on the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch you use them with.

Find My is the only way that you can track or locate a lost or missing device. There is no other Apple service that can find, track, or otherwise flag your device for you".

Hello, GV126c4.

Thanks for getting back to us on this matter. Sorry for the misunderstanding on the missing AirPod. You'd be accurate in that resetting the AirPods may remove it from Find My AirPods (don't reset them). At this point, it would be best to contact Apple Support to look further into the matter with the sound only playing when the AirPod is in the ear.

Hi Matthew,

I've tried all that, and was reluctant to perform a reset, as I figured only the Airpod I still have would be reset, and the missing one would now be gone forever.

The key part of my issue as stated, is that the sound will only play when the Airpod I still have is IN my ear. As soon as it's removed ( as if it were missing ) the sound immediately stops playing.

Any other thoughts as to why the sound will only play while in my ear ?

I spent quite a bit of time with support yesterday, and regrettably they were not at all helpful. They had no answer for the "only playing sound while in my ear", and tried to say it was because one of them was missing ! Ridiculous.

I reached out to the community since there are people here with more knowledge. I wish someone could explain this to me. Looks like I'll be giving Apple more $$$ for a new Airpod...
