sidecar crash with smart keyboard when using "cmd"+"B"/"I", etc.

I use my iPad Pro and Smart Keyboard via sidecar to control my MacBook. It works well for the most part but whenever I use the keyboard cmd for bold or underline, sidecar crashes. I see other people has the same problem but didn't see any useful respond.

I assume it is a shortcut of some sort for the iPad to quit the sidecar mode? How can I change that? It is quite annoying now.

Dear raina_b22,

I have the same symptoms. Restarting Bluetooth, WiFi, and Sidecar on both the Mac and iPad don't help.

The problem occurs with the Magic Keyboard 2 paired with the iPad and controlling the Mac through Sidecar.

I have a second Magic Keyboard 2 that's paired directly with the Mac. There are no Sidecar crashes when I use this keyboard that's paired to the Mac.

Besides Cmd-B and Cmd-I, there are some other key combinations instantly and consistently cause Sidecar to crash (with the keyboard paired to the iPad and using Sidecar):

    1. Escape key (very commonly key used to dismiss dialog windows)
    2. Command-minus or Command-plus (used to increase or decrease font size)

Devices in use:

1) 2018 iPad Pro 12.9" 3rd Gen (ipad8,5)

iPadOS 14.2 Beta 4 (this Sidecar crash has occurred since the public release of iPadOS 14.1)

2) 2018 Mac Mini

macOS 10.15.7 Catalina

Here are some other users who face this same issue:

Hey dearannie,

It sounds like you're having an issue with Sidecar crashing. We can understand wanting to get that resolved. We want to help.

First, we'd recommend checking for and installing any updates that may be available for your devices:

How to update the software on your Mac

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We'd also suggest restarting both your iPad and your Mac to see if that helps if you haven't already.

Then we'd recommend turning Handoff off on both your Mac and your iPad, then turning the option back on again to see if that helps: Use Handoff to continue a task on your other devices

Thanks!

Hey dearannie,

Thanks for trying those steps. We have a few more steps we'll want to take to narrow this down further.

Next, we'd suggest turning off Bluetooth on both devices and then turning it back on:

Use Bluetooth and Wi-Fi in Control Center

Turn Bluetooth on or off on Mac

We'd then recommend testing in a new user account on your Mac to see if the same issue occurs there: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

If the issue continues and you need further assistance, contact Apple Support here: Get Support

Thanks!
