possible Forticlient problem

For months my Mac has had a LOT of trouble keeping all applications running. Most of the time the problem is with Word and Outlook. These two applications freeze. Activity Monitor reports that the applications are not responding. Often I have to do a force-quit.

Today, though, Word and Outlook have been performing nominally. But today the problems have all been with Contacts and Safari. Those applications have repeatedly failed to respond (per Activity Monitor.)

My recollection is that, each time one of these important applications stops responding, I also see in Activity Monitor that a process named FctMiscAgent is similarly not responding. I also notice that, after I force-quit my desired application, then FctMiscAgent responds.

I believe that FctMiscAgent is associated with Forticlient. I installed Forticlient at the beginning of the lockdown, but I have not used it for months. If FctMiscAgent is interfering with the applications that I do use, I could happily remove FctMiscAgent.

I cannot find FctMiscAgent. I would think that it is in one Library or the other.

Does anyone know if FctMiscAgent could be causing my important applications to freeze? And, if so, where is FctMiscAgent?

TIA

If the FortiNet client had an application installer, then see if there is an uninstaller app. Look in the Applications folder for FortiNet folder which may contain an uninstaller. If there is no uninstaller, then check the Fortinet website for instructions for properly uninstalling the software.

You can also check to make sure the Fortinet software is completely up to date. Out of date software could cause problems.

Did you check the Login Items to make sure the Fortinet client isn't being started on login?

Hello R_55a,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!

We understand from your post that you installed an app previously and think it could be interfering with some of the current apps you are using. We recommend testing the issue while your Mac is in safe mode.  The following articles have the steps you will need to test the issue in safe mode:

How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

"Safe mode prevents your Mac from loading certain software as it starts up, including login items, system extensions not required by macOS, and fonts not installed by macOS. It also does a basic check of your startup disk, similar to using First Aid in Disk Utility. And it deletes some system caches, including font caches and the kernel cache, which are automatically created again as needed."

Best Regards.
