Face ID inop

Gradually over the past week or two my face ID has been less and less reliable, meaning sometimes it would work and other times not at all. Today I attempted to re Set Up Face ID altogether and now I cannot get recognition at all. I get to the initial "position your face within the screen" screen and no further. I have tried soft and hard reset and software is up to date with iOS13.7.
