All I have on the iCloud is text files for pages, numbers, and the notes app. I don't even have a big plan for iCloud, only the 5GB.
So why does it say in System Information on my Macbook Pro that it's 42.29GB? Is it saying it could save me that amount of storage or is it actually using that itself? I don't want to use the iCloud, and 42GB is a lot of room to be taken up by something I won't use.

I've tried everything on this list and I'm still at 42GB of storage used. I've checked all of my devices and none of them are on backups. I have no photos, voice memos, or emails that I can find taking up space, and I've almost entirely deleted my messages backlog, which already had the attachments removed before hand. I removed 50% of my pages files and it decreased the usage by 0.08GB, and I have no other files left to remove. Is there anything else that could be taking space? I only have the free 5GB icloud plan in the first place, I don't understand how I could even have 42 GB of space being taken up by my iCloud Drive.

If you have more space in the iCloud Drive folder than you have in iCloud, it will still report the amount of space being used. The sync just won't work.
