Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

After one walk at a higher pace than usual (i.e. without my dog), still no VO2 Max. The heart rate has been recorded properly so I'll just try again later to see if it works. Quite frustrating, with watchOS 6 it recorded VO2 Max even when I stopped a million times as my dog did her dog duties of sniffing the grass and whatnot.

Totally agree the watch not serving any purpose anymore...this Watch was bought for exactly what I can no longer use it for....wonder if everyone demanded a new watch as a replacement with the pre-update ios loaded and a new iPhone with iOS 13

in it what the answer would be....both my watch and phone are under warranty. I have a SE 2020 that is not delivering what it was purchased for.......the the real troubling thing is Apple is not saying anything about it other than a complete wipe. Beginning to see why many people are anti-Apple when it comes to purchasing new technology.

Is that correct that the phone is not wiped first? Are you sure?

In any case, four days is a long time get your data back and I presume there is still additional security setup that has to be done to make the phone operational again, e.g. passwords, credit cards, etc?

I don't backup to the cloud but use my Mac because the cloud doesn't backup music. I have a large music library on my iPhone taken from my CD collection. So if I backup to the cloud and then restore, what happens to all my music?

Apple hasn't provide anywhere near enough information to sort out the individual configurations we may all have.

Don't hold your breath waiting for an apology. I’m not a health and fitness freak but have relied on maps and time to complete miles so I can compare my modest improvements. As of today I’ve bought an alternative watch and fingers crossed will get the accuracy and reliability that both my S1 and S6 watches were unable to deliver.

I think the only time Apple will pay any attention is when they lose sales and start to understand that taking premium paying customers for granted is not a successful business model as the loss will probably spread across their whole eco-system.

Thanks, but I will not be going anywhere near this update.

Apple trashed 3 years of my workout data with the iOS 14 upgrade. In my effort to get the maps working again, I also lost my record "move" streak (220+ sequential days) and all of my health trend data which requires 180 days of activity. It was all reset to scratch. While the nuclear option finally got my maps working again, all my history is gone.

This was my first Apple watch and it will be my last. And I won't buy another iPhone. Apple has shown blatant disregard for user data and has made no acknowledgment or apology for their abject failure over this issue.

These devices are expensive so they should work reliably and if there is a problem, Apple should be there to provide support. They clearly did not do that. They don't take their users seriously.

I once was an advocate for the Apple watch for use as a fitness device. I now tell anyone who asks about using Apple for fitness that they should not purchase one but rather get a device from a company that understands that fitness devices are not a toy and need to be reliable for those who depend on them for their health.

Totally agree with you! I was going to upgrade from an Apple Watch S3 to a S6 until this fiasco occurred. I went and bought a Polar Heart Rate monitor watch, half the price of the Series 6, Battery currently at 63% after two days use, lighter, thinner, provides phone prompts AND accurately tracks workouts with very good GPS reception.

BTW I have no connection with Polar apart from my recent purchase.

Hi there. New to this thread but I’ve read and caught up I think. I’ve lost all my maps from the last 8-months from my Apple Watch (super frustrating). I have a series 3 on iPhone 12. I read that reinstalling everything and re-pairing your watch would fix this. I did all of that tonight and still do not see my old routes. Even routes I KNOW I used to have are just green pins now. Is 14.2 the only answer??? How annoying is this along with no headphones or charger with iPhone 12. Apple is def taking a step backwards.
