Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

Sure, but that doesn't mean the issue is fully fixed. There is a lack of detail on what it actually fixes - e.g:

  1. will it restore maps not recorded since the iOS 14 upgrade?
  2. will it also restore maps from workouts prior to iOS1 14 that disappeared?
  3. or will it only make maps work for new workouts and not fix old data?

News will trickle in as users try it out. As mentioned, I won't be trying it out. Having done the nuclear option to get maps working, I don't want to risk damaging my data again due to another ****-up from Apple.

My word. People are still moaning! These devices are not solely here for historic maps. They are used for thousands are features and things do go wrong. I suspect we are in the minority and it’s one of those things. No company gets everything right every time.

i suggest anyone who has lost faith simply buys an alternative brand when their current devices require replacement. Or speaks to apple directly. Or gets an engineering degree and a job at apple and creates a fix. Stop moaning on here (I can’t seem to switch off notifications and keep waking up to unhelpful comments!)

How do you even have time to exercise as you spend so much time moaning here? Moan to apple directly and use this forum to provide helpful guidance, like the majority on here have done.

As I stated, the reason for my post is that I keep getting emails for every response. I find yours as non value adding. The irony is my reply to you is also non value adding so I shall not be replying to any witty retort you have. (I’ll be too busy working out 🚴🏽)

@colgmaclean - I feel exactly the same, devastated that years of valuable data has been lost.

I had already gone the nuclear route to get maps working again and left it for over a week before upgrading to 14.2. The upgrade did not bring back the old maps for me.

I’m currently researching sports watches to replace my Apple Watch. Apple just isn’t trustworthy.

As you well know, this all worked perfectly until iOS 14 wrecked the functionality and trashed my data. I’m not the only one - many in this thread have experienced the same loss without recovery and without any confirmation from Apple as to why or what we can expect or not expect. Just silence. That is treating customers quite poorly. I came back to confirm that I’d installed 14.2 but it didn’t fix my issue. That’s not latching onto anything but confirming what others have experienced in the hope it helps others.

Now please, can you stop targeting me?

No, Apple did not acknowledge any mistake.

And exactly how have you determined that a ‘minuscule among of people didn’t get the benefit of maps coming back’?? Not that it was a benefit, but rather a feature that stopped working because of a bug Apple introduced.

Exactly what are you contributing to this thread? What’s your purpose here? To help someone?

I guess you are a learner on how to google. Let me help you...taken direct from 14.2 release notes....

  • Workout GPS routes or Health data are prevented from syncing between Apple Watch and iPhone for some users

Got it now??? And how do I know it is a minuscule number of users? Well, apart from this discussion board I haven’t seen too much about it anywhere else...so likely not many suffering right?!

I am not surprised. Apple have not admitted fault in destroying user's health and fitness data with iOS14 so they certainly won't offer to fix your data.

I have not installed the latest version yet as I fully expect it will damage what's left of my data.

My family was planning to give me the latest Apple Watch series 6 for my birthday earlier this month. I got wind of the plan and told my wife to stop it and asked them to find me a Garmin watch - way more reliable and better battery life.

I’ve noticed the same thing on any walk I do over 8km. Only the last half is mapped, although there are stats/data for the entire route. Haven’t tried on the bike or on another gps-related activity.

so disappointing that Apple hasn’t got this software issue right since Sept 2020. Steve Jobs would have never stood for such **** productivity.
