Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

Mine hasn't synchronized, and even today I have holes in exercise and stand hours. I tried rebooting everything and even reverted to my old watch face (at this point I'm trying everything) but it just feels flaky and unreliable at this point. I already restored the watch from a backup, as it fixed an issue I had had about a year ago, but this time it just didn't. I could restore the phone, but I doubt that would help at this point!

Hi everyone,

This morning I had some free time and did some testing.

I tried both the Nike app and the adidas app, as well as Strava and they all plotted the route correctly without any problems.

Not only that, using RunGap I was able to synchronize on all accounts without problems.

I believe that from tomorrow I will start monitoring my run with these tools even if I am a little sorry because I was very, very comfortable with the Training app.

In the meantime, I can confirm that even with version 14.2 Beta 1 the problem remained.

I don't know if this will help with the missing GPS traces, but I'd be curious if anyone could test this.

  1. In the Watch app on the phone, change the watch's name so it's easy to tell apart (e.g. mine was called "Ytse Watch", I changed it to "Ytse Watch 7"; anyone who gets the reference wins a virtual pat on the back).
  2. In the Health app on the phone, go to Browse, then go to Activity > Activity. Scroll down and tap Data Sources & Access. Tap Edit and drag your "current" watch is at the very top (this is why we changed the name). You may have multiple watches with the same name if you ever got your watch replaced or just restored from a backup.
  3. Go back to the "Activity" category and go into "Workouts". Scroll down and do the same with "Data Sources & Access".
  4. Go back to "Workouts", and do the same with "Workout Route Data Sources & Access". Note that in this case I do not have my "current" watch in the list, for some reason.

Just doing that made my iPhone 11 hot so it's probably doing something. I am unable to try an outdoor workout until a few hours from now, but I'm curious to see if others have their watch in the "Workout Route Data Sources & Access" list at all, and if it helps at all with the missing data.

Another oddity I noticed is that, if I go to "Show all workout routes", none of those have any route included. I also had the issue with iOS 13.7 not recording GPS at all (it started failing on Sept 1, just when 13.7 came out), but even older ones that used to have a track are not showing it. This would explain why Fitness isn't picking it up either. (Note that even though I'm a general nerd and have a history of being a developer, I haven't developed on iOS for many years now, and I do not have access to iOS or watchOS's internals. This is just pure speculation on my side.)

I agree, we'd normally be getting this sorted out in 14.2 (since 14.1 is 'reserved' for iPhone 12s and the new iPads), but given how big this is getting — even RunGap's site has a post about this, claiming that it's corrupting Health's database for good — I would hope that Apple's working on some emergency release of 14.0.1 or something to address this.

It's appalling that it's doing this even with Apple's own "internal" apps and nothing else. Personally I'm not a runner, I just track my walk workouts with my Watch and only use iOS's Activity/Fitness app (RunGap is read-only for me), but to completely lose hours of data isn't exactly encouraging.

That didn't work for me, unfortunately. I still have them in RunGap (prior to Sept. 1 anyway; as I said in this thread, my watch stopped recording gps tracks with iOS 13.7, but I only noticed right before updating to iOS 14!), but I can't access any maps in Fitness. Not sure if it's because the Health database is corrupted or it just can't access them.

I have been having all of the following issue. The good news is that I am working with an Apple Support Specialist and they called me back yesterday asking to pull logs from my iPhone.

It seems that Apple is not only 'aware' of the issue, but they have developers assigned to the investigation.

1) Some workouts not syncing to Fitness App

2) Heart Rate Data has large gaps

3) Map missing from workout PRIOR to the update

4) Map only showing starting position on sync'd workouts POST update

5) Activity Bar Timeline not showing all data (Easily seen with the stand timeline)

6) Data MANUALLY sync'd from iPhone to Strava is only showing about 60% of the distance

Yay! This is what happens when people report things to Apple!

People need to keep reporting this to Apple, either through customer support or the feedback page. The more people who report, the larger the pool of data Apple will have to draw from if they need to.

So I took my time today, unpaired and wiped Apple Watch, backed up iPhone to both iCloud and locally and restored it.

I guess it is now syncing with the cloud and everything so I'll give it a couple of days to recover.

Just went out for a walk and tracked my progress with the Workout app. Came back home and it didn't make it to the Fitness app (as of now), maybe it'll get there overnight, will keep you posted.

As of older workouts – still no route on the map. Again, will give it several days to get through.

Got another bug – all my music from Music app disappeared. Turning off/on the music sync didn't help. Will check again tomorrow morning.
