Workout maps gone in iOS 14?

Are workout maps gone in iOS 14? I used to be able to view a map of bike rides, walks, etc. in previous versions of iOS. It was one of my absolute favorite features in the Fitness app!

Please tell me it isn’t so! I would be so disappointed 🥺

Since I updated to iOS14 (iPhone 11 Pro Max) and WatchOS 7 (Watch Series 4), the day it was released, I've experienced the following issues:

  • iPhone heats up continously
  • iPhone battery doesn't even last 7-8 hours
  • All Health data is completely inaccurate, e.g. if I've completed a 45 min run, which is accurate on my watch, it displays ~15 mins in the Health app, all calories, steps, exercise minutes, miles walked etc complete inaccurate throughout the entire day
  • Fitness app - all historical maps and Outdoor runs/walks are missing, since 2015, including the weather data
  • Not all workouts sync to the app (however, with Friends sharing, they can see the workout on my profile, but it's not synced in the app). Also, for workouts that do sync, any outdoor activity does not record the map route and it only displays a green pin on the location where the workout was started.

What have I done?

  • On Saturday, I unpaired and then re-paired my Apple Watch - this did not fix the issue or make it worse, it was just the same.

What's the fix (may not fix it for everyone):

I've now fixed this, this is what I've done (there is no risk to this, providing that you have backed up your iPhone via iCloud or iTunes/Finder):

  • Backup your phone - iCloud/iTunes/Finder - whatever you use
  • Download the iOS14 IPSW file for your phone model (don't factory reset, as you want a clean install of iOS14): https://wccftech.com/how-to/how-to-clean-install-ios-14-and-ipados-14-final-version/
  • Connect your iPhone to your PC or Mac
  • Launch iTunes / Finder and click iPhone folder.
  • Click the 'Restore iPhone' button while holding down the left Option key (Mac) or the left Shift key (Windows).
  • Select the iOS 14 / iPadOS 14 IPSW file you downloaded
  • Let this cleanly install iOS14 on your phone - it will take ~30-45 mins or so
  • Restore from backup - iCloud or iTunes (iCloud takes 1-4 hours depending on how much data you have stored in the cloud)
  • Re-pair your watch
  • Go to sleep
  • Wake up the next day

All my historical Outdoor run/hike/walk maps have reappeared. Any workouts since the iOS14 update does not appear and the 5-7 days Health data is all a mess for when I was experiencing the problem. Maps and routes are now being displayed in Fitness and the workouts are syncing. The Health data is all accurate and in sync. The phone is no longer heating up and the battery is back to normal - 93% since 6am!

I agree with people that we shouldn't have to do all this as Apple have completely messed this up - this is a bug and a serious issue with their Health and Fitness integration. I don't have the patience to wait for the fix, as it will take weeks (in my opinion) and I just want my Health and Fitness all back to normal. The biggest issue was the battery life and the phone heating up.

It's up to you all if you want to do this - do it in the evening, or whenever you've got time, there is no risk as long as you've backed up your phone.

I bet the total looks good, but the standalone stand hours in health will only count the hours that show on the graph?

im seeing the following stats not updating correctly

steps

walking and running distance

exercise minutes

stand hours (weirdly stand minutes shows correct in health)

active calories

workouts have also started playing up and not transferring since yesterday.

i havent reset my phone but I have unpaired and repaired both my watch 3 (not upgraded to ios7) and my watch 5 (upgraded to ios7) and have issues with both.

As a result fairly certain it’s just an ios14 bug.

I just tracked a bike ride and . . . it worked! The map is there and HealthFit transferred it right over to Strava, GPS and all.

Did Apple maybe send out a hot fix or did I just get lucky somehow?

I actually had started my watch activity by accident, and then when I realized, I started Strava. Then I went back to the native watch app just to see, and it was off. I restarted it, and then went back to Strava, which told me I could only have one watch app tracking my activity at a time. So I left Strava off, figuring I should test again. But I doubt that sequence has anything to do with my success.

Anyway, I had tested since my full restore of both watch and phone, and it hadn't worked. But today, it did.

Edit: just checked activities from last week before I noticed the problem, and they are still stuck with just the one location flag.

I thought this was an IOS issue, but I just unpaired and restored from backup my Series 5 watch due to battery draining fast. That fixed battery issue and on my outside walk tonight, map is showing now. I never lost previous maps, only maps since update. I still do not have maps from after update, but looks like since watch restore I have maps now for future workouts.

So who knows whether it is IOS or Watch OS issue???? But my issue appears to be resolved for now by unpairing and restoring from backup my watch.

LOL this is quite absurd: restored everything; not only the maps have not returned and I have to reconfigure all security-related apps from scratch, but I just went for an outdoor walk and it doesn't show up on the phone... and the phone is still hot as ****, eating up battery like crazy. I suppose the health app really is just broken at this point. All I can hope for is that Apple release an update that sorts it out soon.

Beware if you try the whole ordeal of backing up and restoring: it's not certain that it will fix everything!

The problem with heat is that after a fresh install and recovery all of the index need to be rebuilt again. That will take two days and then the heat and battery usage should return to normal. I am staying away from any of these suggestion because this is an obvious bug and that Apple will fix it eventually. I hate that I don't have the maps and used them in Strava to compare my cycling segments with others.

In my case it's really Health.app choking on its database and using so much CPU that the OS kills it; I included a log file showing just that in my report to Apple. :|

At this point, in my case (and I suspect many others), the only hope is Apple releasing 14.0.1 / 7.0.1 soon with some housekeeping routine for Health. I can't see any other way out.

I'm so happy that I want to shout it out to the whole world.

IT WORKS, WORKS, WORKS

I restored the iPhone with a new installation and then I synchronized the Apple Watch again without performing any type of cancellation.

I am attaching the screenshots of both Fitness and RunGap.

Now everything works correctly.

I think that when upgrading from IOS 13 to IOS 14, something must have gone wrong so I think you lose the information.

In the “Fitness” screen, you see that space because I made the ride with the car.

Friday I'm going to do some training and try to monitor what is happening well

Thank you all

Did the IPSW install as mentioned earlier in the thread and the routes are still not there. The maps and weather info is back but just with a pin. Will give it a couple of days to process the data and then see.

Does anyone know if third-party apps are able to record the GPS route whereas the Workout app can’t? Wondering if it’s just a Workout app issue or something else.

Sep 23, 2020 4:01 PM in response to WSREP223

So I decided to go to Apple support today with the issue. I spent the better part of the afternoon backing up my iPhone 11 Pro, unpairing my Series 3 watch, erasing my phone, set it up and used last back up, re-pair the watch and wait...and wait for all apps to be reinstalled. It did not work so the tech scheduled a call to “escalate” the case. The tech on the phone wanted to do the same thing. After declining he said it was a known issue that would be addressed in the future. Tonight I took a walk and...the route was there! None of the past routes (years worth) are back but it is a start.

I have iPhone XR and a series 3 watch.

My workouts (runs and walks) are being recorded accurately (distance, duration, splits etc) but the map is not working - just a pin on the starting point.

I tired unpairing and re-pairing my watch and when doing this, selected to set up the watch as new (ie did not select to restore).

Sadly, it did not fix the problem.

I sure hope Apple fixes this soon. I now ha ea week of workouts with no maps which breaks RunGap’s ability to compare similar activities.
